Police say rise in fake IDs

AMES - Ames police say they've noticed an increase in the number of fake IDs that retailers are confiscating.

Most of the fakes look like Illinois licenses. Police say retailers are trained on what to look for and they're doing a good job. They say the South Duff Wal-Mart has turned in several over the last couple of weeks.

Bars and restaurants are also on the lookout for fake ID's, many times the bouncers at the door know exactly what to look for.

Police say people who are under the legal drinking age are simply hopping online to order their fakes.

Getting caught with a fake id can cost you your real drivers' license for a month. If you're caught producing a fake IDs in Iowa, you could spend up to five years in prison.
